Holly Miller is an experienced FNP-C. During her education at Fresno State, a colleague of hers encouraged her to work in Dermatology, because it’s the one specialty where you can make a difference that people can see. That colleague was Rao Dermatology PA-C, Joseph Contreras – and it was history ever since. She’s been with the Rao Dermatology team for over five years, and loves her “second family.” Holly explains that Dr. Rao’s humble nature and big heart to lead the team has shaped her to be the practitioner she is today. Read below to learn more about Holly, her history, and her tips for your best skin.
How did you get started with Rao Dermatology?
The second year of my FNP program, my clinical site in Lemoore (private practice) was sold and because they were in the process of transitioning, they were no longer accepting students. This meant I had to find a clinical site, last-minute. It’s no easy feat. After many calls, I found a place that was willing to take a student. Little did I know, this would be one of the best decisions of my career. I was fortunate enough to learn from the most intelligent and compassionate individual I have ever met, Julie Guyette, NP. Once a week Joseph Contreras, PA (also a very intelligent and compassionate individual), came and saw Dermatology cases at Julie’s office. Since I was a student in the office, I got to work with Joseph and learn about Dermatology. While working with Joseph, I realized that I enjoyed Dermatology and all things skin and decided to pick his brain about how to get a job working for a Dermatologist.
A few months after graduation, I got a call from Joseph asking if I was still interested in Dermatology. Excited to move into the field I felt passionate about, I submitted an application and came in for an interview. I was also asked to shadow Dr. Rao while he was performing MOHS surgeries – this is the part I was nervous about. I had been known to not tolerate watching surgeries, and I was really afraid I was going to faint during a procedure, instantly ending my Dermatology career! I decided to watch every surgical procedure on YouTube that I could find – the more graphic, the better! I was going to desensitize myself as best I could. Fortunately, it worked! And I am glad it did because one of my favorite parts of working with Dr. Rao is assisting with MOHS and closing the cases.
What’s your favorite part of being part of the Rao Dermatology team?
The sense of cohesiveness between our team members at Rao Dermatology is unparalleled. We are a united front, with the goal of providing high quality Dermatology services to our patients. People have the opportunity to choose from many Dermatology providers in the Central Valley. Our dedication to our patients and to providing high quality care is what I believe sets us apart from other practices.
What skincare advice do you have for the summer months?
Proper skin care is vitally important during the summer months. Not only are people at risk for skin cancer, but they are at risk for hyperpigmentation, premature aging, and worsening appearance of scars. I love being outside, especially poolside, but sun protection is a must! If you are going to be outside, go out before 10am, and try to stay inside until after 2pm. If you are outside between 10am and 2pm use a broad spectrum UVA/UVB sunscreen, SPF 30 or greater, and reapply it every 90 minutes. Wear a wide brimmed hat. Better yet, if you are going to be out for long periods of time, invest in solar-protective clothing – then, you don’t have to worry about reapplying sunscreen.
Eczema can be another issue during the summer months if you are spending more time in the pool or sweating a lot. Remember to always stay hydrated from the inside out. Use hypoallergenic products to bathe, moisturize, and launder your clothing. Rinse off after swimming, and apply a good amount of lotion after showering. To prevent eczema flares, apply lotion twice daily, especially after bathing, and increase lotion application when itchy.
What product do you recommend for someone who is spending more time outside or in the pool?
Our new Rao Dermatology Pro-Tect line of products is an ideal solution for those looking to hydrate and protect with SPF 45. For anyone that seems to be sensitive to sunscreens, I highly recommend Vanicream products. They are ultra sensitive! No parabens, fragrances, gluten, etc. I like Cetaphil and CeraVe lotion, but love CeraVe healing ointment for those really dry spots, or for eczema flares. If you plan on swimming, get something that is sweat/water resistant and remember even if it’s SPF 100, it still needs to be reapplied every 80-90 minutes and after toweling dry- so set a timer!
